St. Joseph Co-Cathedral - 1977-present

St. Joseph was established as a mission of Assumption in 1817.  Two years later, a small wooden chapel was built and dedicated to St. Joseph. No photos exist of the mission chapel.  The parish was established in 1847 and the first brick church was built by Fr. Charles Menard (1845-1896) in 1849.  This church, which is called the first St. Joseph Church was located on Highway 1 at St. Joseph Cemetery behind the Menard Monument and priest tomb (where a mausoleum is now located).  The rectory stood on the left which later became the first St. Joseph Hospital later replaced with another building and then later the hospital moved to another location.  The cemetery on the right is located behind the large mausoleum and the graves still stand there.  In the photos there is a huge front yard.  Today a large and small mausoleum occupy that area.

The steeple was lost during a hurricane in 1906 and the church burned on May 25, 1916.  The church was relocated on Canal Street and completed in 1923.  Construction began in 1920 and the first mass was celebrated on January 25, 1923.
